At 2:30 every day my body starts crying out for a little piece of chocolate. I read and re-read different nutritional guidebooks to better understand why my body responds this way. I wanted to conquer this battle. It was my fault and my dependency on this food. It was my fault and my inability to control my cravings. It was my fault and the fat little girl inside that wanted nothing more than a tub of cookies n cream ice cream. Then one day, actually, it wasn’t my fault, it was much deeper.
I am part of a target audience, a segment, that the sugar food industry converted into a return customer AND so are you! Dope up food with the right amount of sugar and watch people transform into recurring customers. High doses of sugar create surges of dopamine that when cut off suddenly create a yo-yo effect that it makes you crave that high again and again. Have a little piece of cake and you’ll crave another to get back to that high. I am addicted and many are. It’s a different kind of addiction we all share, it takes longer to kill you and it’s governmentally endorsed.
Sugar has a new face- High fructose corn syrup- how many of you know what that is? It’s modified corn syrup that spell OBESITY AND TOXICITY. The majority of shelf food boasts high doses of this ingredient and no one knows what the heck it is. Fast food restaurants serve this up to us without a second thought and you wonder why you’re craving some fries at 10pm?

It’s no small coincidence that the US is the largest sugar producer in the world. Domestically grown white sugar in the US costs 56 cents versus the world sugar cost of 30 cents. Why? The main reason is it costs more to develop sugar on American soil.
But, don’t feel too bad for our challenged farmers because we give these sugar lobbyists subsidies to offset the extra effort and so they can continue to feed our addiction. What are the effects of all of this sugar?

Sugar companies have placed its sticky hands in our schools, marketing to our kids and making sure they are addicted to “fast food”, soft drinks, vending machines and more. So while the rest of the world is suffering from hunger, we’re on the polar opposite side of the spectrum. How are we going to claw our way back?
- Demand nutritional information from fast food industries and restaurants.
- Shop at Whole foods, fresh market or local farmers markets.
- Audit schools for nutritional information.
- Ban vending machines that don’t have nutritional food products.
- Feed children organic foods with natural spices to improve the taste and quality of foods provided and rewire kids thinking.
- Penalize fast food industry and junk food industries to subsidize the healthier counterpart.
- Teach kids to cook and give them information about nutrition.
It will take time to beat the sugar out of our foods but this is a health issue we must win or it will further cost us not only our health and wellbeing but our children’s as well.
